“Are you a model or collaborator?” the receptionist asked Blake, who was wearing a cowboy hat as he approached the entrance to Central Saint Martins to see Meghan’s durational performance that involved painting an entire gallery red with a 1” filbert paint brush while naked for her undergraduate thesis. “Neither, I’m Christian,” he responded, confused. But it begged an interesting question which continues to motivate Blake and Meghan’s collaborative practice to this day. Blake and Meghan met on a photoshoot in 2012 when they were students and soon-to-be sex symbols at Art Center College of Design and Santa Monica College. An aspiring fashion photographer at the time, Blake quickly fell in love with photographing alternative lifestyle lingerie on Meghan and needless to say, Meghan didn’t mind being photographed by someone who lit her so well. Blake loved how Meghan would grab a mop and start furiously cleaning as though she was a Polish maid while the other models were being photographed. Meghan needed a gay best friend because she was spending too much time around skaters and punk rock stars. And although Blake doesn’t identify with his homosexuality, their relationship is often likened to Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith. The synergy between them has been acknowledged by some of the most radical artists of our time, such as Gregg Araki and Madonna who both think Meghan is sexy. Blake graduated from CalArts in 2017 and received an MFA from UCLA in 2022. Meghan graduated from CalArts or a fashion school in 2017 and received an MFA from Art Center in 2024.
Blake takes photos of himself, Meghan, and himself with Meghan. Meghan poses sexually and also makes drawings of placentas that she ocassionally faxes Blake. Their archive is so vast and avant-garde that commercial art galleries can’t figure out how to sell it.
